The Tsunami disaster that struck the island late last
year was a tragedy that shook the lives of all Sri Lankans.
While nations of the world set aside their differences
and came together as one to bring in relief into the
country, SriLankan Airlines too made significant contributions
towards easing the suffering of hundreds of thousands
of Sri Lankans affected by it.
SriLankan Airlines airlifted approx. 1000 tons of free
cargo from its on-line points all round the world. Relief
was brought into the country from several cities in
India such as Trivandrum, Trichy, Bangalore, Madras
and Mumbai. In addition to this, relief was also brought
in from Singapore, London, Frankfurt, Paris, Doha. Pakistan,
Kuwait, Oman, Zurich, Dubai and Bangkok. This relief
collection process was initiated by the respective Country
Managers who were very enthusiastic and responded instantly
when the request was made. These relief goods consisted
of food, water, shelter and essential medical items
needed urgently for the mere survival of the public
affected by this tidal wave.
SriLankan Airlines also waived off handling charges
for flights, which brought in relief goods. This encouraged
more than 100 mercy flights into the country. The airline
also sponsored free travel for doctors and relief workers
from its on-line points.
All relief goods were officially handed over to the
Joint Operations Commanders (JOC) and the Ministry of
Welfare and Social Services along with the support of
the Ministry of Finance who distributed these items
throughout the island. The medical items were handed
over to the Medical Supplies Division of the Ministry
of Health, who distributed the medicines to hospitals
throughout the island.
Our staff also visited affected areas and listened
to their sorrows. Staff also went to various collection
points including the JOC collection points and helped
pack stuff. They did this during their spare time all
on voluntary basis.
